The Quarter-Mile King Is Back
The quarter-mile diesel record you almost missed… Scheid Diesel’s iconic dragster goes 6.005 at 242 mph.
What if we told you Scheid Diesel lit the world on fire this summer, but that its achievements somehow went unnoticed? Would you believe us? Turns out, the team with the billet-aluminum block, 12-valve Cummins from Terre Haute, Indiana ran the 6.005-second quarter-mile at 242 mph that’s printed on this timeslip—and they did it more than three months ago. The new quarter-mile mark, which crushes the previous record (one that was also held by Scheid), came while competing in the 32-car class known as Top Dragster, the NHRA Division 3 category they’re regulars in.
According to longtime wheelman, Jared Jones, “Now we know that 5,950 rpm and 212-psi of boost will give you a 6.0 at 242 mph [laughs].” In fact, with a minimum class index of 6.10, Jones was legally too fast for Top Dragster on the pass. Even more intriguing is the fact that a 5.99x would’ve gotten him and the rest of the Scheid crew kicked out of the event. As fate would have it, the compound turbocharged, P-pumped, Cummins-powered Scheid Diesel rail had the perfect 6.00 in its arsenal—and we’re ecstatic they’ve allowed us to get the word out about it.
Beyond the glamor of those monumental quarter-mile numbers, keen eyes will notice that that’s also an eighth-mile trap speed record for a diesel. And those same eyes may also pick up on the fact that the Scheid rail can indeed run 3’s in the eighth-mile. Is it spring yet? Because we’re already ready for the 2024 ODSS season opener in Florida…
