The Scheid Diesel Extravaganza Delivers Once Again
Drag racing and truck pulling from SDX, another E.T. world record for Michael Cordova, and a Cummins-converted E-350 overlander.
The anticipation was as high as the Midwest humidity—and the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza delivered. With what appeared to us to be a higher turnout than in years past, a large crowd was treated to a wild heads-up Pro Dragster final between record-holder Michael Cordova and Scheid’s own Jared Jones, as well as an impressive side-by-side, 4-second Pro Street final between points leader Paul Cato and last year’s champion Justin Zeigler. Cordova and Zeigler would grab the W’s in their respective classes. In Pro Mod, it was Larson Miller and team Firepunk leaving Wagler Motorsports Park with the trophy and, in a tight 5.90 Index field, it was Jayle Wagler who managed to pull out the win in her “No Maintenance” Duramax dragster. The victors in 6.70 Index, 7.70 Index, and ET Bracket included Jesse Pittman, Tyler Stacy, and Michael Gaskin.

The World’s Fastest Dragsters Go Head-To-Head
In a final round many of us have been longing for, the Scheid Diesel rail, driven by Jared Jones, squared off against current record-holder, Michael Cordova. It was Cummins against Cummins, but that’s where the similarities ended. It was also CP3’s vs. P-pump, common-rail vs. mechanical injection, big single vs. compounds, and 5-disc dry clutch vs. TH400. Prior to the epic showdown, Michael Cordova had bested his own E.T. record with a 3.77-second eighth-mile (3.79 previously) and Jared Jones had strung together a pair of 4.07’s. In the finale, both drivers shared similar reaction times, but Cordova’s ability to cut sub-1-second 60-foots paid off, giving him the edge off the line. The result at the stripe was an exhilarating 3.81 to 4.10 win for Cordova. You’ll find a full recap from SDX 2024 here.
Winners In The Dirt
A few hundred feet to the east at the Extravaganza, dozens of trucks and tractors performed on the two-sled pulling track on Friday and Saturday. Among those most successful in the dirt was Scott Barcus in the “Cole Train” Dodge, having earned a Second Place (Friday) and First Place (Saturday) in the Pro Street Diesel Truck class. Longtime puller, Adam Hallien, took the Limited Pro Stock Diesel Truck Class (3.0 smooth bore) win behind the wheel of his Cummins-powered square body on Saturday night, while 16-year-old Trenton Ingram piloted the Scheid Diesel Dodge to victory in the Pro Stock Diesel Truck Class (3.6 smooth bore). Terry Biggs’ “Dead Pull” Ford would cover the most ground in the Super Stock Diesel Truck Class for the Saturday night win.

The fire-red, Ohio-based Chevrolet will be up for grabs for $225,000. Like all high-end competition vehicles, you can’t build your own version of this truck for that price. One thing is undeniable here: the buyer will have a proven winner right out of the gate.
Unique Swap
A Cummins-Converted Overlander
What does a retired diesel mechanic do in his spare time? How about treating a ’95 E-350 4×4 RV to Cummins power and Super Duty axles and suspension! British Columbia native, Dave Quinn, did just that with this overlanding-capable rig. His ultra-clean Ford motorhome rides on an ’08 Dana 60 and coil spring front suspension and utilizes a 10.5-inch Sterling out back. Finagled in place under the hood, you’ll find a VE-pumped 12-valve Cummins, complete with an S362 SX-E hanging off the exhaust manifold. The 6BT bolts up to an NV4500 manual transmission. Dave performed all of his own work and recently set out on a 6,100-mile round trip in this one-of-a-kind Ford.
