1,480-RWHP Triple-Turbo 6.7L Power Stroke

A brand-new VP44 Cummins record, a 1,480-rwhp 6.7L Power Stroke, testing ramps up for Cleeter’s AWD vs. RWD shootout, and ZF-8 swapping commences at Firepunk Diesel.

Lightweight, well-fueled, and very little time spent under the chargers. Meet Wayne Yates’ latest project. The Stroke Works Diesel Specialties-built Super Duty, coined “Fire Ant,” packs a built 6.7L Power Stroke sporting three Precision turbos and S&S fueling. The triple arrangement includes a pair of Gen 2 6870’s out front and a Next Gen 7475 in the valley—along with three wastegates limiting boost to 90-psi. A DCR pump combines with an S&S 12mm CP3 to support a set of 150-percent over injectors, with a factory lift pump supplying fuel to the DCR and a 250-gph FASS system sending 18-psi to the stroker CP3. On the Northwest Dyno Series’ SuperFlow, the truck cleared an impressive 1,480-rwhp on fuel.

Transmission Swaps

The First Crate ZF 8-Speed Shows Up At Firepunk Diesel…

ZF 8 Automatic Transmission Powerline Ram Truck HD Crate

Are ZF 8-speed swaps incoming? Yes, but not right away. Thanks to the ZF (PowerLine, etc.) unit’s 10-bolt bell housing and tail housing it’s going to take some custom parts to get them swapped into third and fourth-gen trucks, but you can bet the 48RE swap experts aren’t wasting any time getting started on it. Speaking of the 48RE, Firepunk’s Lavon Miller showed the world how much larger the ZF 8-speed’s input and output shafts are in a recent video posted on social media. In fact, the ZF transmission’s output shaft diameter is notably larger than the common 29-spline, 48RE fat shaft upgrade. According to Firepunk, the ZF automatic can be controlled via a TurboLamik TCU, a proven transmission control unit that’s already on the market.

New Quarter-Mile VP44 Record

Dodge Ram 2500 24-Valve Cummins 5.9L VP44 Diesel Drag Race Record Fastest Secon-Gen

Big news in the VP44 world, and it comes from the Pacific Northwest. On August 23rd, Chris Krebs’ bad in black second-gen stormed through Qlispé Raceway Park’s quarter-mile track in 9.78 seconds—a new world ET record for the VP/24-valve platform. The record came on a single turbo (a 5-blade, 72mm unit from Stainless Diesel) and on a 1.46-second 60-foot, something Chris believes he can get down into the 1.3’s. When that happens, the truck should go 5.90s or better through the eighth-mile as well. Years in the making, we think Chris is just getting started. Look for him to go even deeper in the 9’s in the future.

Team Crazyhorse Tests With Confidence

Cleetus MacFarland’s October 1st AWD vs. RWD shootout is fast-approaching, and last rounds’ big winner, Nathan Wheeler, is turning up the temperature in the room with social media posts like this: “They say I had data that made the difference. What they didn’t tell you is I out-worked them.” He’s not wrong, with a race prep schedule that included working his 9-5, grabbing some dinner, and then testing all night… Rumor has it the RWD crowd will have a burnout box at their disposal this time around—and while this addition doesn’t seem to bother the AWD racers, at this point every single tweak in the event’s rules tends to spark an uproar on social media. Anticipation is at an all-time high—and millions will do doubt be tuning in to view Cleetus’s recap video.

A 7.3L Finds Success At SDX

Super Duty F-350 Regular Cab 4x4 Diesel Truck 7.3L Powerstroke

The action is so widespread at an event like the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza that there are dozens of stories to tell, and this underdog story is definitely worth an honorable mention. CNC Fabrication’s Ethan Hurtt showed up at Wagler Motorsports Park with an untested 7.3L-powered Super Duty named “Paint Chip.” And, not knowing what to expect, he proceeded to put together a string of 7.7x passes and even qualified in the 7.70 Index field. The truck’s surprisingly simple, 650hp setup includes CNC Fab’s own injector and high-pressure oil pump upgrades, Jelibuilt Performance custom tuning (by way of the industry-standard, Power Hungy Performance Hydra Chip), a drop-in Gen 3 Stage 3 turbo from KC Turbos, and a 4R100 from Wyse Auto Repair—all stacked on top of a stock 7.3L bottom end.
