Up Close and Personal with the NEW, high output 6.7L Power Stroke

2023 Super Duty F-450

We got to meet a ’23 Super Duty—with the NEW, high output 6.7L Power Stroke under the hood—thanks to our friends at Morrow Brothers Ford. This particular F-450 was ordered in Lariat trim, hence why the H.O. engine was obtainable this quickly. Look for higher level trims, coupled with the new 500 hp, 1,200 lb-ft Power Stroke, to begin shipping soon.

Now, after having seen the new Super Duty live and in the flesh, there are some gripes we agree with—and others we do not.

Gripes we agree with: 1) the bedside steps and 2) the rear corner step bumper, both of which are reminiscent of what GM has done with its HD’s.

Gripes we don’t agree with: 1) the grille, which doesn’t jut out nearly as far as many have exaggerated they do and 2) the F-150-like, C-clamp style headlights, which we like.

The Verdict: Ford’s cosmetic and ergonomic updates for ’23 are minimal, which in the opinion of some buyers doesn’t justify the 15-percent price increase. HOWEVER, the 500 hp, 1,200 lb-ft high output Power Stroke option does warrant the higher cost—at least in our opinion. Not very far down the road from where this ’23 was delivered, a different ’23 model (also equipped with the high output 6.7L) turned out more than 480 hp on the chassis dyno—so it appears Ford is once again underrating its diesel trucks from the factory. Look for the H.O. Super Duty’s to be nothing short of beastly in the power department.
